The film program, offered as part of Black Disguises exhibition, is presented by the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art Rijeka in collaboration with Art kino Croatia.

The recent scenes of Asian refugees on the Croatian borders unfolded between two separate sets of pictures, pictures that would be difficult to erase from the country’s collective memory. The first one reveals trains crowded with people who were leaving Yugoslavia for work in foreign countries; the second shows buses packed with people who are about to become stateless too, departing from urban Slavonia at the beginning of the 21^st century. The history is evidently repeating, but the impressions are significantly different. It is hard to believe that the relatively comfortable journeys of these new economic emigrants or the periodic car rides from one city to another, captured in HRPA ZgRiZg by ĐorđeJandrić, will reach the level of psychosocial tragedy and iconographic exoticism that existed in the Croatian documentary film of the 1960s and the 1970s.

Documentary filmmakers’ cameras were not positioned only at train stations, from which depart Papić’s Special Trains and Mikuljan’s passengers from Jesenice-Stuttgart. These horrors of organized and strictly controlled exile towards the unknown is accompanied by individual drama depicting a nostalgic return to the barren land and another separation from family and homeland, which is documented in Tadić’s Party and / or Radić’s Journey. Finally, let us not forget to mention the charter flights full of Balkan daughters travelling across the ocean to meet their prospective husbands. Regardless from where we look, from this side or the other, the anxiety of the (e)migration and the (e)migrants will follow these passengers, like a deadly boomerang.   Diana Nenadić
