Damijan Kracina (1970) holds an M.A. in sculpture and video art from the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Ljubljana. He later pursued advanced studies also in Graz, New York, at the Tamarind Institute in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and at the Santa Fe Art Institute in Santa Fe, New Mexico, USA. In 1992 he co-founded the art group Provokart. He was also the artistic director of the art centre Artilerie Kluže, and a co-founder of the artistic collective Društvo za domače raziskave (Home research society). He has been a professor with the Secondary School of Design and Photography in Ljubljana since 2010. He lives and works in Ljubljana.

Since his residency at the Tamarid Institute Albuquerque in 2002, Kracina has been painting and sculpting experiences from the desert near Trinity, the location where the first testing of the atomic bomb took place. The impression of the landscape, combined with the brutal historic moment of human progress, was the inspiration for the creation of new life forms and futuristic creatures. Unearthly bio forms, “observed” in the radioactive desert sand, are placed in a human-like social dynamic; as a twist, they are often embraced by a scenography of cold medical equipment and household furniture. His recently updated collection is presented in all its biotic diversity and multiplicity.
