Artist and authors of the exhibition talk, exhibition guidance: Saturday, 28.1.2017. at 11 am (participants – Irena Bekić, Duga Mavrinac, Andreja Kulunčić, Ana Hušman, Božena Končić Badurina, Sandra Sterle, Tomislav Brajnović).
Exhibition Between There and There: Anathomy of Temporary Migrations was made through interdisciplinary anthropological and artistic author cooperation of curators Irena Bekić and Duga Mavrinac. The project studies the personal stories, social and cultural processes resulting from the movement of temporary migration of different migrant groups, such as workers in households and nurses, physical and seasonal workers, artists on residencies, and others. In contrast to the dominating speech in the public space of refugees and asylum seekers and their sufferings, we draw attention to those groups of invisible migrants, people from our community, neighbors, friends, acquaintances and family members that are largely left to their own tactics of coping with life, but also to the prejudices of the community from which and to which they move.
Large-scale exhibition catalogue 2016
The analysis of temporary migration usually discusses the policy and methods of integration of migrants, while the analysis of the angles of the so-called “Departure countries’ are often neglected or completely absent. Therefore, the exhibition focuses on three aspects: the tension of being on two addresses, invisibility in public space and everyday life, and processes and transformations in the countries of departure.
Artistic production of ten authors, educational museum workshops and workshops with students, student exhibition guidances, meetings with artists and roundtable Temporary migration – liminality, vulnerability and work are platform for migration research processes, including the participation of migrant groups, their activation and networking opportunities. The exhibition explores contemporary migration processes in countries marked by long-term migration, Croatia and Romania, and the application of the concepts of otherness, closeness, tolerance and mobility in questioning continuous movement of workers in the direction of Western European countries.
The works of art, generated from the beginning of the 2000s to today, thematicaly include contemporary temporary migration, and those at the beginning of the last century, or they elaborate on the issue of territorial political boundaries, testifying the continuity of the phenomenon, as well as the long-term artistic preoccupation with the theme, in spite of its current actualization.
The backbone of the project has a potential capacity for alliance of cultural anthropology and art, closeness in their active and dynamic role towards its own action, seeking and finding new methods, forms of presentation, theories and metaphors of reflection on modernity.
Collaborative method is established on the level of curating the project and individual collaborative projects, so cooperation becomes a fundamental principle in the construction of the exhibition. It corresponds to the solidarity which is established among migrants at insecure market, in casual labor relations and in the situations of dual residence and belonging.
The exhibition includes ten artists: Tomislav Brajnović (HR), Danica Dakić (BIH), Larisa David (RO), h.arta group (RO), Silvia Hell (IT), Nicole Hewitt (HR), Ana Hušman (HR), Božena Končić Badurina (HR), Andreja Kulunčić (HR), Veda Popovici (RO), Sandra Sterle (HR).
