Open call for participation on art and research project and exhibition Between There and There: Anatomy of Temporary Migrations. Exhibition will be held, together with exhibition of Neli Ružić: Shadows of the Future, as a first episode of activities in the beginning of 2017, within EU project RISK CHANGE. It is a project co-financed by EU program – Creative Europe. During four years (July 1st, 2016 – May 31st, 2020) the project is going to work on creating, connecting, comparing, and promoting of European contemporary interdisciplinary arts connected with social studies, applied sciences and migrations, with a goal of building of networks and inter-connectedness between migrants and local residents. Between There and There: Anatomy of Temporary Migrations is a group, juried exhibition which is engaged in researching of temporary migrations as important clamps of intercultural dialogues. Artworks of authors who will be presented at the exhibition, and artworks of authors who will be selected throug this open call selects six-membered jury: exhibition curators, Irena Bekić and Duga Mavrinac; members of jury and curators at MMSU, Ksenija Orelj, Nataša Šuković and Marina Tkalčić; member of jury and museum educator at MMSU, Milica Đilas.

Art and research project and exhibition Between There and There: Anatomy of Temporary Migrations gathers multidisciplinary team, it anticipates art productions, new performance spaces, different educational forms, and developes platform for researching of migration processes including participation of migration groups, their activation and possibility of networking. The project is opened towards different cultures and is focused on transnational aspects of cooperation and networking.

Occupying an activationg position in relation to its own double belonging and living at two adesses, temporary migrants are potential activators of resistance practices, adaptation adn possible social change.

Open call is published for two segments of participation:

  1. art project
  1. educational programme

From the authors who applies to a public call with the proposal of art projectit is expected to present through their artwork the subject of migrations, with an emphasis on temporary migrations. Defining of temporary migrations allows wide range of artistic research and agency, like researching consecutive and multiple stays in country and abroad that can be motivated by requirements of labour market (gender based migration, migrant workers – gastarbaiters, migrations of highly qualified work groups, illegal work etc.), by professional interests (brain drain of younger population, educations) etc. The aim is to produce an artwork that will instigate understanding, and critical thinking of the audience/society. It is also important to put emphasis on research of transnational processes of global trends, on the processes which, in the context of migrating, activate on the personal and collective level, on the role of migrants as a potential bearers of social change in the spaces through which they migrate. Emphasis is, furthemore, on artistic, but also on anthropologic observing of migration processes from the perspective of countries from which people leave.

From the authors who applies to a public call with the proposal of educational programme it is espected to create workshops with the goal  of activating and networking of migrant groups, but also education of primary and secondary school population about essentiality of intercultural dialogue, tolerance, about the reasons and ways of migrating, and about necessity of accepting others and those who are different, about positive effects of migrations etc. The workshop goals should anyhow anticipate connection of local and migrant population, and including of migrants in the local community.

The application must contain:

  1. For art project:
  • personal information: name, surname, birth date, adress, telephone number, e-mail adress
  • professional CV
  • description which will enable insight to jury into proposed work with appropriate documentation (sketch, photo and video, etc.)
  • technical information about the exhibition and production of work (name, year, technique, dimensions)
  1. For educational programme:
  • personal information: name, surname, birth date, adress, telephone number, e-mail adress
  • professional CV
  • description of educational programme, which will additionaly be developed in the cooperation with authors and curators of the exhibition, and with the muesum educator

Notes for applicants:

  • individuals and collectives from Croatia and EU have the right to apply to open call
  • one author can apply with one artwork (all artworks should be ready for presentation)
  • authors can apply with new artworks or already existing ones
  • applications should be sent by email to the address marina.tkalcic@mmsu.hr  with a note „Temporary migrations: art project“, if application refers to suggestion of art project, or with note „Temporary migrations: education“, if application refers to suggestion of educational programme
  • application forms without the required documents jury will not take into account considering them incomplete
  • organizer will cover the costs for: transportation of artworks; fee per project in amount of 3.000,00 kunas gross (regardless of wheter it is art collective or individual author) –additional means of production aren’t provided within the amount; travel and accomodation costs for 3 nights max.

Open call lasts from December 2nd until December 31st, 2016. Notice about accepted proposals will be published by the January 9, 2017. The exhibition will be held in the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Rijeka, from January 27th until March 19th, 2017.
